Chalutzim Goes Behind the Scenes at HSJ

Chalutzim 2016

This past Friday, we as Chalutzimers had the opportunity to shadow staff members in order to learn a bit about what it means to work here at Jacobs Camp. Jacobs means so much to each and every one of us, and we were excited to see some of the behind the scenes work that goes into making Jacobs Magic. At the end of the day, every single one of us had an absolutely amazing experience, and now we all want to be on staff.

“The best day for me as a camper was ‘take a Chalutzimer’ to work day. I got lucky enough to shadow the director, Anna Herman, who I got to learn a lot about and see her love for camp. The day was full of keeping camp in order with budget tallies, meetings, and golf cart rides where I got to boss staff members around that normally tell me what to do. I also got to go to places I have never been before and see new things like the new bunk bed design and the room with the staff supplies. I have to say my favorite part of the day was being apart of ‘walkieland’ and talking to my friends who shadowed other staff members over the walkie-talkies. It’s great to say I have been the highest authority/staff member in camp and it only took 2 years!”

“Shadow day was one of my favorite days at camp as a Chalutzim camper. I was shadowing Alex Elliot, the sports specialist. We started off the day by watching over a capture the flag game. Then we played Mat Ball in the Berman and soccer on the lower athletic field. I got to hang out with all the staff on sports and the younger campers. I even got my own visor with ‘SPORTS!’ written on it! This day was an amazing experience for me because I learned what it felt like to be on staff along with the responsibility that comes with it.”

“I, along with Briana Mullenix, got to shadow Becci Jacobs, the assistant director of camp. We started our morning off early with coffee at Anna and Nadav’s house. After breakfast, we had a meeting with all the unit heads and then hung out at the office and talked about what Becci does on a normal day. Next, we took an off camp trip with Adam O. and his shadows for milkshakes. When we got back, we roamed around and helped out where we could, just like Becci does. It was such a cool way to spend our morning that at lunch all of Chalutzim was begging to continue shadowing upper staff. I’m so glad I got this chance to go ‘behind the scenes’ and see how my favorite place is run.”

We want to thank every single staff member that allowed us to shadow them. We also want to thank Jacobs Camp as a whole for continuing to provide us with new experiences and allowing us to grow as individuals. We can’t wait until the day when we have shadows of our own!
